One of the worlds largest Caves underground -The Luray Caverns .
After seeing the best of the tourist attractions i flew from Los Angeles to Washington DC from the west Coast to East coast .My fist halt was at Virginia .Many tourists are not aware of this beautiful and very interesting tourist attraction the Luray Caverns .These caves are very close to the Luray Virginia .They were discovered in 1878 .Either a conducted tour from washington DC or self driven car are the best options to see these caverns .
why these are famous and what you get to see in these underground caves covering 1.25 miles and these are live and changing . There are small water bodies underground which add to the beauty .you get to see the speleothems columns , mudflows , stalactites ,stalagmites and mirrored pools .
They take you underground in batches of 20 persons with not much waiting except the holiday season .It takes 2 hours plus to see complete time fro seeing and commuting to that location is an activity of half day .They take you down approx 260 ft.These were formed millions of years ago by the underground rives and seepage of the acid bearing water through layers of limestone and clay .
There are Stalactites are seen on the roof of the caves and made of materials like minerals, mud and dripping water . They are in many beautiful shapes and sizes and different colours .where as stalagmites are seen on the floors of the caves they grow towards the roof made of same materials .They are in thousands and make very beautiful formations .
In India there are similar caves in Pithoragarh district of Uttrakhand state .
Don’t miss out to see the Fried egg shaped formation sitting in albumen .The other is the Dream lake . This is a beautiful reflecting the stalactites on top in the surface and lake is not small it is good 2500 sq ft .
Then there are the sacarans tent and Plutos Ghost .It is curtain like thing from roof to the floor and looks very stunning . Then the Plutos Ghost is tall and huge you cant imagine till you see it.It is so huge that you can see it from many locations of the caves .
The ticket is $27 and it is conducted tour .
